Civil 3D Course – Surveying, Roads and Grading
Our Civil 3D course covers the workflow for road and site design: import survey points, build a surface, design alignments and profiles, and create corridors with quantities. Book a free demo class and a counsellor will share the complete outline, fees and batch timings.

Quick answer
Civil 3D is Autodesk’s civil engineering design software built on AutoCAD. It creates dynamic surfaces, alignments, profiles, corridors and grading models, so a change in the design updates sections, plans and quantities.

About the Civil 3D Course
Roads and sites are three-dimensional problems drawn on flat sheets. Civil 3D solves this by building a model of the ground and the design, and generating plans, profiles and sections from it. The course teaches you the workflow in the order a project actually runs.
You start with survey data, build the existing ground surface and check it for errors. You then design an alignment and profile, apply a typical cross-section to create a corridor, and compute earthwork.
Finally you produce deliverables: plan-and-profile sheets, cross-sections and quantities. Because everything is linked, you also learn how to change the design and let the outputs update.
Who should take the Civil 3D Course?
Civil graduates
Roads and infrastructure employers expect it.
Surveyors
Turn field data into surfaces and plans.
Site designers
Grading and drainage layouts.
What you will be able to do
- Import survey points and create surfaces
- Draw alignments and profiles
- Design a corridor using an assembly
- Create sample lines and cross-sections
- Compute earthwork quantities
- Produce plan and profile sheets
Your first month. You create a surface from points, draw an alignment and build a profile.
A worked example from class
You import a survey points file, create an existing-ground surface and draw a 500 m road alignment. You build the existing-ground profile, design a finished-level profile with a vertical curve, apply an assembly to create a corridor and extract cross-sections and earthwork quantities. A plan-and-profile sheet is generated.
What you need to practise
- Autodesk Civil 3D access
- Basic AutoCAD skills
- A survey points file
- Road design criteria
- A capable computer with enough RAM
How progress is assessed
A small road or site project is reviewed for survey handling, surface quality, alignment and profile design, corridor results and output sheets.

Module by module: what you actually do
Survey and surfaces
Points are imported, grouped and used to create surfaces, with contours and checks for bad data.
Alignments
Horizontal alignments with tangents and curves are drawn to design criteria.
Profiles
Existing ground profiles are generated, and finished-level profiles are designed with vertical curves.
Corridors
Assemblies define the road cross-section, and corridors create the 3D design.
Grading and sites
Feature lines and grading objects shape platforms, and simple earthwork balances are computed.
Sheets
Plan and profile sheets and section sheets are produced and plotted.

Projects you will work on
- A surface from survey points
- A small road corridor
- Plan and profile sheets
AutoCAD vs Civil 3D
| Point | AutoCAD | Civil 3D |
|---|---|---|
| Objects | Lines and polylines | Intelligent surfaces and alignments |
| Changes | Redraw | Dynamic update |
| Used for | General drafting | Infrastructure design |
Mistakes we fix early
| Common mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Bad survey data | Check point coordinates and elevations |
| Wrong coordinate system | Set it up at the start |
| Editing static lines instead of dynamic objects | Edit the alignment or profile and let sections update |
| Skipping design criteria | Confirm road standards before drawing |
Who this is not for. If you have not learned core AutoCAD, take that course first.
How this is used in real work
Highway, water and land development consultancies use corridor modelling because changing a road design by hand is slow and error-prone.
Survey quality has a big effect. We show how to clean data and how to spot suspicious points before they ruin a surface.
Careers and next steps
Highway, water and land-development consultancies hire for Civil 3D design technicians. Show a corridor model and the plan-profile sheets in your portfolio.
Roles include design technician, highway design assistant and land development draftsman. A portfolio with a surface, alignment, profile and one section sheet shows the workflow.
Learn road design basics alongside the software for the best results.

Fees
Fees depend on the number of hours, batch type and track, so the counsellor shares the exact amount with your outline after the demo. See the fees guide to understand what changes the price.
