About the AutoCAD Course for Interior Designers
Interior design drawings must persuade a client and instruct a contractor. The first is about visuals; the second is about accuracy. This course focuses on the second, because a design that cannot be built from the drawings stays a concept. You learn to draw the sheets that a carpenter, electrician and painter can all follow.
You begin with a plan drawn from site measurements, then place furniture and fixtures from a block library you build yourself. From the plan you develop the ceiling and lighting plan, flooring layout and wall elevations, and finally the joinery details for wardrobes, kitchens and panels.
Throughout, you learn habits that avoid disputes: dimensions that state where they measure from, material notes on every elevation, consistent layer names and a title block that carries revision information.
Who should take the AutoCAD Course for Interior Designers?
Design students
Move from concept sketches to working drawings.
Freelance designers
Quote and execute without depending on a drafter.
Studio assistants
Speed up layouts with blocks and templates.
What you will be able to do
- Draw plans from site measurements
- Build and reuse a furniture block library
- Prepare reflected ceiling and lighting plans
- Draw wall elevations with finishes
- Detail wardrobes, kitchens and panels for carpenters
- Present sheets in a neat set
Your first month. In the first month you draw a 2BHK plan from measurements, build your first blocks and set up the furniture layout.
A worked example from class
You measure a 2BHK flat from a sketch, draw the plan with wall thickness and doors, and build blocks for a bed, wardrobe, sofa and dining table at real sizes. You check walkway clearances, draw the false-ceiling outline with lights, and elevate the TV wall with materials marked. The trainer reviews whether a carpenter could build from it.
What you need to practise
- AutoCAD with a metric template
- A tape-measured sketch of a real room
- A folder for furniture blocks
- Material samples or finish names to annotate
- A PDF portfolio template
How progress is assessed
Each sheet in your set (furniture, ceiling, flooring, elevations, joinery) is reviewed for accuracy, readability and consistency, then compiled as a portfolio PDF.

Module by module: what you actually do
Measuring and drawing the plan
You turn a hand-measured sketch into a drawing with wall thickness, doors and windows, checking the diagonals to catch measurement errors.
Furniture and blocks
Beds, wardrobes, sofas, dining sets and bathroom fixtures are drawn at real sizes as blocks, with clearances for doors, drawers and walkways.
Ceilings and lighting
False ceilings are drawn with levels, cove lines and light points, along with AC grilles and fans, and a legend explains the symbols.
Flooring and finishes
Tile layouts and patterns are drawn with hatches, transitions between materials are shown and finishes are listed in a schedule.
Elevations and joinery
Wall elevations show heights, units and materials. Sections of wardrobes and kitchens show shelves, hinges and edge profiles.
Sheets and portfolio
The drawings are arranged on sheets, plotted and compiled into a portfolio PDF with a cover page and index.

AutoCAD and other tools for interiors
| Tool | Best for |
|---|---|
| AutoCAD | Accurate working drawings |
| SketchUp / 3ds Max | Visualisation and renders |
| Revit | Whole-building models |
Mistakes we fix early
| Common mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Furniture at the wrong size | Draw every block at real size |
| No clearances shown | Check walkways and door swings on the plan |
| Elevations without heights | Dimension heights and mark materials |
| No coordination with electrical points | Show switches and sockets on the plan |
Who this is not for. If you mainly want photorealistic renders, plan to add the 3ds Max course. This course focuses on working drawings.
How this is used in real work
Interior studios work with many trades at once, and each trade reads a different part of the drawing set. The best studios keep drawings consistent so a change in one sheet is reflected in all of them.
Freelance designers also benefit: a good drawing set reduces site visits and arguments, which saves time and protects your margin.
Careers and next steps
Interior firms hire for design assistant, draftsman and site coordinator roles. A neat drawing set matters as much as a render, so show both in your portfolio.
Common starting roles are interior design assistant, draftsman at a studio and site coordinator. A portfolio that shows both working drawings and a rendered view is strongest.
To extend your skills, add 3ds Max or SketchUp for visuals and a short course in project costing.

Fees
Fees depend on the number of hours, batch type and track, so the counsellor shares the exact amount with your outline after the demo. See the fees guide to understand what changes the price.
