AutoCAD MEP Course – HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical Drafting

The AutoCAD MEP course trains you to draw mechanical, electrical and plumbing services over an architect’s base plan so that ducts, pipes and cable trays do not clash on site. Book a free demo class and a counsellor will share the complete outline, fees and batch timings.

Quick answer

MEP drafting means drawing building services: HVAC ducts, plumbing and drainage pipes, fire-fighting lines and electrical layouts. The course teaches how to draw them on a base plan, use layers and xrefs correctly and produce coordination drawings.

About the AutoCAD MEP Course

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings share one problem: they are drawn over the same building and must not collide. The MEP course teaches you how to organise that work. You attach the architect's plan as an external reference, create separate layers for each system and draw your service on top without touching the base.

You then draw the three main systems. HVAC covers duct runs, equipment and diffusers; plumbing covers supply, drainage and risers; electrical covers lighting, power and cable routes. Each system has its own symbols, layers and conventions.

Finally you coordinate. By overlaying the services with each other and with the structure you find clashes on screen instead of on site, mark them, and issue revised drawings with a revision table. This coordination habit is what separates a good MEP draftsman from someone who just draws lines.

Who should take the AutoCAD MEP Course?

Fresh engineers

MEP drafting is a common entry job at consultancies and contractors.

Diploma holders

A practical skill with steady demand in building projects.

Site supervisors

Read and mark up service drawings.

What you will be able to do

  • Attach an architect plan as an xref and set up service layers
  • Draw HVAC duct layouts with sizes, diffusers and dampers
  • Draw plumbing supply, drainage and riser diagrams
  • Draw electrical lighting and power layouts with a legend
  • Overlay services to find clashes
  • Issue coordinated drawings with revisions

Your first month. You refresh AutoCAD, learn the xref workflow and draw a small duct layout over a floor plan.

A worked example from class

You attach an architect's floor plan as an overlay xref, fade it, and draw supply ducts from an indoor unit to four diffusers, labelling sizes. On another layer you draw the plumbing for two bathrooms, and on a third the lighting circuits. Overlaying all three shows a duct crossing a beam; you move the duct and note the change. That is the daily work of an MEP draftsman.

What you need to practise

  • AutoCAD with xref skills
  • A sample architectural plan and ceiling heights
  • Symbol libraries for services
  • Basic services knowledge: ducts, pipes, circuits
  • A PDF viewer for marked-up drawings

How progress is assessed

A coordinated services set is reviewed for layer discipline, correct symbols, sizes, clashes and clean plotting.

Module by module: what you actually do

Base plan and xrefs

You attach an architectural plan, fade it, create service layers and set up viewports for each discipline. You also learn to handle plan updates without losing your work.

HVAC drawing

You place equipment and diffusers, draw ducts with sizes, add dampers and flexible connections, and draw a section through a congested ceiling.

Plumbing and drainage

Supply lines and drainage are drawn on separate layers, with fixtures from a block library, risers and stacks, and a vertical riser diagram.

Electrical layout

Lights, fans, switches and sockets are placed with correct mounting heights in notes, circuits are drawn to a distribution board, and a legend is added.

Coordination

You overlay all services and the structural layout, mark clashes with revision clouds and propose fixes, then update the drawings.

Issue and revisions

Sheets are set up with title blocks and revision tables, drawings are plotted to PDF and a transmittal note summarises the changes.

How the training works

  1. 1. Book a free demo class

Mistakes we fix early

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Common mistakeWhat to do instead
Drawing on the architect file instead of an xrefAlways attach the base as an overlay xref
Ignoring beam depths and ceiling heightsCheck the structural and reflected ceiling plans
Mixing all systems on one layerKeep one layer set per system
No clash check before issueOverlay all services and review sections

Who this is not for. If you expect to size ducts and pipes yourself, you will need an MEP design course as well. This course teaches drafting and coordination.

How this is used in real work

Building services are often more complex than the architecture they sit in. Consultants and contractors need drawings that show not just where things go but how they relate, and MEP draftsmen who coordinate drawings early prevent expensive rework.

Many projects now use BIM, so MEP draftsmen who also understand Revit MEP have more options. Starting with AutoCAD gives you the layer, xref and plotting discipline that BIM also depends on.

Careers and next steps

Many learners start as MEP draftsmen, then move to coordinators or designers. Gulf employers also ask for MEP drafting; always check an employer’s requirements before applying.

Typical roles are MEP draftsman, junior coordinator and design assistant at consultants and contractors. A portfolio sheet showing an overlay with clashes marked and resolved is particularly persuasive.

Overseas markets also hire MEP draftsmen; verify any employer and agent carefully before applying.

AutoCAD MEP Course FAQs

Is MEP the same as the Electrical course?

No. MEP covers building services. The Electrical toolset covers control schematics.

Do I need Revit?

Not to start. Revit MEP is a natural next step.

Do you teach HVAC calculations?

This course is drafting. Calculation basics are explained so you understand the drawing.

Can civil students join?

Yes.

Is the free demo available?

Yes.

Will I learn duct and pipe sizing?

No, sizing is a design task. We explain what sizes mean so you can draw and check them.

Do I need to know all three disciplines?

You will get an overview of each, and you can focus on the one you want to specialise in.

Is Revit MEP included?

It is a separate course. We show how AutoCAD skills carry over.

Can I use my college drawings?

Yes, as practice material, as long as you have permission.
