Quick answer

AutoCAD Plant 3D is a toolset for process plant design. You draw P&IDs, place equipment, route pipes from specifications and catalogues, and generate piping isometrics, orthographic views and material reports directly from the 3D model.

About the AutoCAD Plant 3D Course

A process plant is a network: tanks, pumps, exchangers and hundreds of pipes carrying fluids between them. Plant 3D handles this by linking two views of the same plant, the P&ID that shows process logic and the 3D model that shows physical layout. Learning to keep them in step is the heart of the course.

You begin with project setup, specifications and catalogues, which decide what pipe, fittings and valves the software offers. You then draw a P&ID, model equipment and route piping, and validate the model against the diagram.

The course ends with deliverables: orthographic views, isometrics and material reports. These are what a fabricator and a procurement team actually use, so you see how drawing quality feeds directly into cost and schedule.

Who should take the AutoCAD Plant 3D Course?

Mechanical and chemical graduates

Piping design is a common entry path at EPC firms.

Piping draftsmen

Move from 2D to model-based piping.

Plant engineers

Understand and review designs.

What you will be able to do

  • Set up a Plant 3D project with specs and catalogues
  • Draw a P&ID with equipment, lines and valves
  • Model equipment and route pipes in 3D
  • Check the 3D model against the P&ID
  • Generate piping isometrics
  • Produce material reports

Your first month. You set up a project, draw a simple P&ID and begin modelling a pump skid.

A worked example from class

You draw a P&ID for a pump taking suction from a tank with two valves and a pressure gauge, tag every item, and then model the same system in 3D. Plant 3D checks that the model matches the P&ID, and you generate an isometric with a bill of materials for the discharge line.

What you need to practise

  • AutoCAD with the Plant 3D toolset
  • Basic knowledge of process flow and piping
  • A pipe spec and catalogue
  • A capable graphics card
  • Sample P&IDs for practice

How progress is assessed

A small plant section is assessed on P&ID accuracy, 3D routing, model-to-P&ID validation and isometric output.

Module by module: what you actually do

Project and specifications

You set up a project folder, choose a pipe specification and understand how catalogues control the components you can place.

P&ID drawing

Equipment, lines, valves and instruments are placed with tags and properties, and data is checked with reports.

Equipment and piping

Equipment is modelled with nozzles, and pipes are routed using specs, with supports added where needed.

Validation

The model is compared against the P&ID to find missing lines or mismatched tags before drawings are issued.

Isometrics

Piping isometrics are generated with dimensions and a bill of materials, and styles are adjusted to office standards.

Reports and exports

Material take-offs and line lists are exported for procurement and review.

How the training works

Mistakes we fix early

Common mistakes and how to fix them
Common mistakeWhat to do instead
Routing pipes without a specChoose the pipe spec first
Tags that do not match the P&IDKeep line numbers and equipment tags consistent
Ignoring supports and accessLeave room for valves and maintenance
No validationRun the P&ID to 3D check before issuing isometrics

Who this is not for. If you have never worked with AutoCAD or know nothing about piping, start with the mechanical course and a piping basics course.

How this is used in real work

Plant design companies produce vast amounts of piping documentation. Automation of isometrics and reports saves time, but only when the model is correct, so design discipline matters more than speed.

Domain knowledge such as pipe sizes, flange ratings and process flow matters. We explain enough to let you draw sensibly, and your engineering background fills the rest.

Careers and next steps

Typical roles are piping designer, piping draftsman and design engineer in EPC and fabrication companies. Domain knowledge matters; pair the software with piping fundamentals.

Typical roles include piping draftsman, piping designer trainee and design engineer assistant at EPC and fabrication firms.

A portfolio with a P&ID, a model screenshot and one isometric sheet shows the complete workflow.

Fees

Fees depend on the number of hours, batch type and track, so the counsellor shares the exact amount with your outline after the demo. See the fees guide to understand what changes the price.
