Draftsman Course – Become a CAD Draftsman
A draftsman course should leave you able to produce a clean, standard drawing set by yourself, which is what employers hire a CAD draftsman to do. Book a free demo class and a counsellor will share the complete outline, fees and batch timings.

About the Draftsman Course
A draftsman does not invent a design; a draftsman makes sure everyone else can read it. That sounds modest, but it is a demanding skill: dimensions must be right, views must agree and drawings must follow a standard that dozens of people understand.
The course is therefore organised around drawing sets, not commands. You choose a discipline, learn the standards that apply to it and produce complete sheets, from title block to revisions. Along the way you pick up the checking habits that separate reliable draftsmen from rushed ones.
The last part is about getting hired: assembling a portfolio, writing a one-page resume, practising drawing tests and answering common interview questions.
Who should take the Draftsman Course?
ITI and diploma holders
A direct route to entry-level drafting jobs.
Graduates seeking a first job
Fill the gap between degree and workplace.
Experienced hands switching to CAD
Convert site knowledge into drawings.
What you will be able to do
- Produce a standard drawing set in your discipline
- Redraw a sketch into a clean drawing
- Follow layers, line types and title block standards
- Check your own drawing before issue
- Prepare a PDF portfolio
- Answer common drafting interview questions
Your first month. You complete the core AutoCAD modules, choose your discipline and draw your first full sheet.
A worked example from class
You are handed a hand-drawn sketch with dimensions in the margins. You redraw it on the correct layers, apply the standard title block and line types, dimension it, check it against the sketch and plot it. The trainer then marks mistakes the way a senior draftsman would, and you issue a revision.
What you need to practise
- AutoCAD
- A standard title block template
- Sample sketches from your discipline
- A PDF portfolio folder
- A habit of checking before issuing
How progress is assessed
A full drawing set in your discipline is reviewed against drawing standards. You also practise a timed drawing test and common interview questions.

Module by module: what you actually do
Core AutoCAD
You cover drawing, editing, layers, blocks, dimensions and plotting at the speed needed for a drafting job.
Standards
Line types, scales, lettering, sheet sizes and title blocks are set up and used consistently.
Discipline set
A full set is drawn in your field: for example a building set, a mechanical part and assembly, or an electrical layout and schematic.
Checking and revisions
You learn to check your own drawings against a markup, track changes with revision clouds and keep a revision table.
Portfolio
Sheets are exported as PDF, ordered and captioned to form a short portfolio.
Interview practice
Timed drawing tests and mock questions prepare you for the common hiring process.

Draftsman vs designer
| Point | Draftsman | Designer |
|---|---|---|
| Works from | Sketches and instructions | Requirements and calculations |
| Core skill | Accurate drawing | Engineering decisions |
| Entry | Diploma, ITI, degree | Degree |
Mistakes we fix early
| Common mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Treating a certificate as the goal | Focus on finished, correct drawings |
| Dimensioning without a rule | Follow a consistent dimensioning standard |
| Unchecked drawings | Check dimensions and overlay before issuing |
| Applying with no portfolio | Attach three to five sheets to every application |
Who this is not for. If you want to design structures or machines, a draftsman course is a first step. You will need more engineering study.
How this is used in real work
Most drafting jobs start with a drawing test. Employers use it to judge accuracy, speed and layer discipline. Practising under time pressure is the best preparation.
Employers also notice how you ask questions. A draftsman who asks before guessing and records changes clearly is trusted with larger tasks.
Careers and next steps
Draftsman roles exist in construction, manufacturing, utilities and consultancies. Salaries differ widely by city, discipline and experience, so check current listings and survey data rather than trusting a single figure.
Entry roles include trainee draftsman, CAD technician and design assistant. With experience you can move to senior draftsman, checker or coordinator roles.
Adding a second tool such as Revit or SolidWorks raises your options.

Fees
Fees depend on the number of hours, batch type and track, so the counsellor shares the exact amount with your outline after the demo. See the fees guide to understand what changes the price.
Draftsman Course FAQs
Is a draftsman course worth it?

Which discipline should I pick?
The one you studied or want to work in. The counsellor can help.
Do you guarantee a job?
No.
Free demo?
Yes.
Is the course suitable for ITI students?
Yes. It is designed for diploma, ITI and degree learners aiming at drafting roles.
Do you help with applications?
We help with portfolio, resume and interview practice. We do not guarantee jobs.
Can I choose my discipline?
Yes. Tell the counsellor and your trainer will plan accordingly.
Is a certificate given?
