SolidWorks Course – 3D Mechanical Design
The SolidWorks course teaches parametric 3D design: you sketch, extrude and assemble parts, then generate drawings that update when the model changes. Book a free demo class and a counsellor will share the complete outline, fees and batch timings.

About the SolidWorks Course
SolidWorks rewards planning. Every part begins as a sketch, and the way you dimension and constrain it decides whether the model behaves well when you change it. The course teaches this discipline from the first exercise, so you build models that are easy to edit.
After sketching, you add features in a sensible order, build assemblies with mates and create drawings from the model. You also learn simple sheet-metal design, a practical skill for fabrication and enclosure work.
Throughout, you connect modelling to manufacturing. A part that looks fine on screen but cannot be machined or bent is a bad part, so the trainer asks the manufacturing question at each step.
Who should take the SolidWorks Course?
Mechanical students
Design projects look professional with proper models.
Production engineers
Understand designs and suggest changes.
Product design aspirants
Parametric thinking is the core skill.
What you will be able to do
- Create fully defined sketches
- Model parts with extrudes, cuts, holes and fillets
- Build assemblies using mates
- Check interference and basic motion
- Create drawings with views, sections and BOM
- Design simple sheet-metal parts
Your first month. You model a bracket, a shaft and a flange and make your first drawing from the model.
A worked example from class
You sketch the profile of a flange, fully define it with dimensions, extrude it, cut a bolt-circle hole pattern and fillet the edges. You assemble the flange with a pipe using mates and run an interference check. A drawing with three views, a section and a bill of materials is generated from the model.
What you need to practise
- SolidWorks access arranged through a student or commercial licence
- A workstation with a supported graphics card
- Engineering graphics basics
- A sketchbook for parts to model
- Familiarity with manufacturing terms
How progress is assessed
A part, an assembly and a drawing are reviewed for fully defined sketches, a clean feature tree, correct mates and drawing standards.

Module by module: what you actually do
Sketching
You create fully defined sketches with dimensions and relations, and see how under-defined sketches cause problems later.
Part features
Extrudes, cuts, holes, fillets, patterns and shells are combined to model brackets, shafts and housings.
Assemblies
Components are positioned with mates, subassemblies are used and interference is checked.
Drawings
Views, sections, dimensions and a bill of materials are generated and annotated to your standard.
Sheet metal
Flanges, bends and flat patterns are created for typical enclosures and brackets.
Design habits
You learn naming, feature-tree organisation and file management for reuse.
How the training works
- 1. Book a free demo class
- 2. Receive the course outline, fees and timings
- 3. Get matched with a suitable trainer
- 4. Attend live classes and draw along
- 5. Finish project drawings with feedback
- 6. Receive your completion certificate
Projects you will work on
- A bracket and bolted joint
- A small assembly such as a vice
- A sheet-metal enclosure
SolidWorks vs AutoCAD for mechanical
| Point | SolidWorks | AutoCAD |
|---|---|---|
| Approach | Parametric 3D | Mostly 2D drawing |
| Edits | Change a dimension, model updates | Edit geometry |
| Typical job | Design engineer | Draftsman |
Mistakes we fix early
| Common mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Under-defined sketches | Fully constrain sketches with dimensions and relations |
| Features in random order | Plan the feature tree like a manufacturing sequence |
| Over-mating assemblies | Use the minimum mates needed |
| Skipping drawing standards | Set a drawing template early |
Who this is not for. If you only need quick 2D drawings, AutoCAD is the faster tool.
How this is used in real work
Product design companies and manufacturers use parametric CAD to iterate quickly. Changing one dimension and watching the assembly update is much faster than redrawing.
Fabricators receive drawings and flat patterns from such models, so understanding both the model and the output is valuable.
Careers and next steps
Design engineer and CAD engineer roles often list SolidWorks. Pair it with strong drawing basics and an understanding of manufacturing processes.
Roles include design engineer trainee, CAD engineer and product design assistant. Show a part, an assembly and a drawing in your portfolio.
Combine with AutoCAD for 2D layouts and with manufacturing knowledge for stronger prospects.
Useful reference: SolidWorks (Dassault Systèmes).
Fees
Fees depend on the number of hours, batch type and track, so the counsellor shares the exact amount with your outline after the demo. See the fees guide to understand what changes the price.
SolidWorks Course FAQs
Do I need to buy SolidWorks?
Ask the counsellor about licences available to students; we do not support pirated software.
Is AutoCAD required first?
No.
Do you cover simulation?
A basic introduction at most.
Free demo?
Yes.
Is it easier with AutoCAD knowledge?
You will understand drawings better, but SolidWorks thinking is different.
Can I get a student licence?
Ask the counsellor about options available for learners.
Do you cover simulation?
Only a basic introduction at most.
Is it enough for a design job?
It is a strong start. Design roles also need engineering fundamentals and experience.
